KBR Building Group Earns ABC National Safety Designation for 2012
August 2, 2012

KBR Building Group has achieved the Diamond level of the Associated Builders and Contractors’ (ABC) Safety Training and Evaluation Process (STEP) program, a highly competitive and prestigious national award given annually to those companies who lead the industry in safe practices. STEP Diamond represents the pinnacle of safety performance in the construction industry.

Using industry measurement benchmarks — incidence rate and Experience Modification Rate (EMR, or “mod factor”) — STEP Diamond examines a company’s long-term safety performance and recognizes exceptional commitment to a safe workplace.  On average, only 5% of STEP applicants meet the stringent criteria to qualify for STEP Diamond. KBR Building Group was previously at the Platinum level.

“Having our safety program recognized nationally by ABC at the highest level is a milestone achievement of which everyone in KBR Building Group should be extremely proud," said Andy Johnson, Director of Safety, KBR Building Group. "ABC's Diamond STEP Award recognizes our teams companywide for their extraordinary effort in working towards the common goal of eliminating workplace incidents and injuries. Achieving STEP Diamond isn’t easy — many companies with exceptional safety records do not meet the stringent qualifying criteria."

“It is an honor and a privilege to be able to recognize KBR Building Group for its STEP Diamond achievement,” said ABC President and CEO Michael Bellaman. “Diamond Award winners have used the STEP program to evaluate and strengthen their safety programs and  have proven themselves leaders in the journey towards a zero-incident jobsite. KBR Building Group’s safety performance is at the top of the construction industry and their continued dedication to providing a safe workplace for their employees furthers ABC’s mission to help our members win work and perform that work safely, ethically and profitably.”

As a STEP award recipient, KBR Building Group is being recognized throughout 2012 by various local ABC chapters. KBR Building Group’s Atlanta and Washington D.C offices were the first to be formally presented with STEP Award certificates. The Atlanta office was recognized by ABC Georgia, while the Washington office was recognized by both ABC Metro Washington and ABC Virginia. Next to be formally recognized will be our Charlotte, Greenville and Raleigh offices — all part of ABC of the Carolinas — and Orlando, which is associated with ABC of Central Florida.

A long-term member of the ABC organization, KBR Building Group is an ABC Accredited Quality Contractor (AQC) in good standing for the years 2011/2012.

More about the Diamond STEP Award — Established more than 20 years ago, ABC’s Safety Training and Evaluation Process (STEP) Awards program specifically recognizes construction companies for their achievements in safety training and self-evaluation, including their ongoing efforts to develop a quality safety program. Key criteria for achieving the Diamond level of recognition include excelling in 20 key safety measurable components. These include maintaining an incidence rate of at least 50% below their NAICS code industry average in each of the past three years. There can be no fatalities or willful/repeat OSHA violations and the EMR must be at or below 0.70. Company employees must also meet specific safety training requirements, become actively involved in the company safety program and provide the documentary evidence of achievement.  STEP awards are presented annually in six categories: Participant, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum and Diamond.  Each year, over 2,000 contractors of various sizes participate in the STEP program.
