KBR Building Group Tops Out Residential Tower, The Place at Liberty Center South, in Arlington, Virginia
April 10, 2013

KBR Building Group’s project team for The Place at Liberty Center South (The Place) in Arlington, Virginia, participated in a traditional topping-out ceremony last month to celebrate reaching the highest point of construction. Attendees included executives and employees from the project’s Owner/developer, The Shooshan Company, who were joined by their equity partners, Arlington County officials, representatives of RTKL (architect of record) and more than 250 tradeworkers.

The special event held at the construction site included a catered lunch and remarks by KBR Building Group’s Todd Cramer, lead superintendent. Cramer pointed out that KBR Building Group’s Washington office has used the same American flag for every topping out celebration since that office was established nine years ago.  “Besides being part of an age-old construction industry tradition, for us this particular flag signifies that each job has reached that milestone with an excellent safety record,” said Cramer. “ To date, our team for The Place has completed 207,866 man-hours, 362 safety audits and a total of 116,747 safety observations.  The flag will continue to be passed down to future project teams for their topping-out celebrations.”

Designed for LEED Silver certification, The Place is a 17-story, 238,060-square-foot residential tower, with four levels of below-grade parking containing 257 units and 9,000 square feet of ground-floor retail.  The Place represents the third phase of the Liberty Center South planned development, conveniently located in the Ballston neighborhood near Washington’s metro transportation line. Construction is scheduled for completion in the fall of 2013.
