Sustainable Features
Over 14% of the materials used in the building are made from recycled content and 30% were harvested and manufactured regionally. The adhesives, paints and coatings used during construction contained little or no volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Low-flow and low-flush fixtures have resulted in an impressive 40% reduction in water usage. The building envelope, windows, ventilation system, and appliances have been designed/selected so that Aurora uses 15.7% less energy than a comparable non-sustainable facility. More than 35% of Aurora's annual electricity consumption is offset by renewable energy certificates. Over 38% of the site is open space, which is key for providing habitat for vegetation and wildlife in an urban environment.
