Sustainable Features
Nestled in between the Blue Ridge Parkway, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and the Oconaluftee River, the Cherokee Central Schools Building Program is the largest LEED certified school project in the region. This 17-building, 475,000-square-foot K-12 school complex serves more than 1,200 students from the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. The entire school is heated and cooled using a geothermal heat pump system. This closed-loop system is supported by 290 wells, each 6" in diameter and 450' deep.
